Lecture Recital Celebrating African American Composer William Dawson

Join us for coffee and pastries and learn about the fascinating tale of African American Composer William Dawson, presented by Dr. Mark Malone. Vocal solos, composed by Dawson, will be performed by Mezzo-Soprano Katrina Cox.

Katrina L. Cox 

Laurel, MS native, Katrina L. Cox holds degrees in vocal performance from William Carey University, the State University of New York at Binghamton, and is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern Mississippi. In New York, she performed with Tri-Cities Opera, the Big Band Jazz Ensemble, “Harpur Jazz”, Opera North in New Hampshire and toured through Southern Tier New York with her own jazz band, “The New Standard” from 2007-2009. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Music and the director of Carpenter’s Wood in the Winters School of Music at William Carey University.

Dr. Mark Malone

With a career in education that spans 46 years, Mark Hugh Malone has worked with students of all ages. Though a native of Florida, the majority of Malone’s teaching has been in Mississippi at Pearl River Community College, William Carey University, and The University of Southern Mississippi. As curriculum designer for the Mississippi Arts Commission, he has created arts-integrated curricula that includes: The Mississippi Blues Trail and Beyond, Mississippi History Through the Arts-A Bicentennial Journey, Footprints in the Dust-The Natchez Trace, as well as three soon to be published S.T.E.A.M. curricula.
